How do I get the shiniest, most metallic finish from Silk PLA?

The secret to maximum shine is heat and speed. To get a brilliant silk gloss, print the outer walls (perimeters) slowly (around 40–60 mm/s) and increase the nozzle temperature to the upper end of our range (215–220 ℃). The hotter and slower the filament flows, the shinier it becomes.

Is Silk PLA as strong as standard PLA?

No. To achieve the beautiful glossy finish, Silk PLA contains elastomeric additives. This makes the filament more brittle and significantly reduces layer adhesion compared to standard PLA. It is strictly recommended for decorative items, not load-bearing functional parts.

Why does my print look dull or matte instead of shiny?

A dull or matte finish usually means you are printing too fast or too cold. High-speed printing doesn't give the elastomers in the Silk PLA enough time to melt properly. Slow down your outer wall speed and increase the temperature by 5-10 ℃.

Why are the supports so difficult to remove on my silk prints?

Silk PLA is notorious for bonding tightly to its own supports, often leaving ugly marks. To fix this, go to your slicer settings and increase the "Support Z-Distance" (the gap between the support top and the model bottom). You may also want to slightly decrease the support density.

Do I need to dry Silk PLA before printing?

Yes, if left exposed to the air. Silk PLA can be more sensitive to moisture than standard PLA. If your filament has absorbed moisture, the water will boil in the nozzle, creating tiny bubbles that completely ruin the smooth, shiny surface. Dry it at 40–45 ℃ for 4 to 6 hours.
